There are many times when I started using and essential oils (and even now…mom brain anyone?) when I have wanted to know the dilution ratios for my children. I have three all two years apart so do I use the same amount for each of them? How do I know? Then when I went looking there was an overwhelming amount of charts out there! I felt overwhelmed and some of these charts had very aggressive amounts of essential oils listed. This is my solution, research, and here is what I have found: less more often is actually better than a lot all at once!
Let’s dilute this-a guide to diluting essential oils.
Research shows that diluting essential oils is actually good for you! Diluting helps you to have a localized effect and helps you receive longer-lasting benefits from the essential oils. Fractionated Coconut Oil is a great choice as a carrier oil for dilution because it will not alter the chemical constituents in your essential oils because it has a near neutral ph.
Some studies have shown that when using diluted essential oils there are some varying levels of specific constituents that can be detected in the breath you exhale in as little as 20 minutes! The really interesting part of this study was that “neat” or undiluted application of the oil did not show any results on the same test for up to two hours later.
Don’t flash off!
One very important benefit of diluting essential oils is reducing the amount of “flash off” that may occur. Remember that essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds and when exposed to air they evaporate. If you dilute in a carrier oil you will lose less of your essential oil to the air and more will make it to the desired area of topical use.
Diluting is fairly simple. Choose a glass container that is airtight, add your essential oil, top with a carrier oil, and close. To combine the oils rotate the container in your hand.
Okay, my mom brain is kicking in and I think we have had enough science for now. Ya, with me? Great! Now check out this great freebie!
