You may have heard all the buzz about these crazy things, essential oils. You may have been told, “just use some lavender.” Or, “have you tried that peppermint oil yet?” Maybe, you have never heard of essential oils or their benefits, but now you have and if you are anything like me, you want to know more (and just so you know…they are not snake oils like I thought!). So just what are essential oils? Well, let’s chat about it!
What are essential oils?
When you walk through a garden or a citrus grove, the aroma that you smell is from the essential oil that occur naturally as a way to protect and support life in the plants. Essential oils are derived from different parts of plants. Some, like citrus oils, can come from the rind, while others come from bark, twigs, leaves, roots, seeds, petals and other parts of plants. Some are steam distilled while others are cold pressed (from the rind of the citrus).
Essential oils are also considered “volatile aromatic compounds” because they can change from their solid or liquid state to gas state when they are at room temperature. What is so amazing about this component of essential oils is that they can move quickly through the air and into your nose so that you can receive the aromatic benefits that they have to offer you simply by breathing them in! That’s it. All you have to do is smell them.
Are there other ways to use them?
Sure there are! Learn about them here.
Each essential oil is unique and has it’s own chemical makeup. This allows for a wide range of benefits from just that one oil. Essential oils range from complex to simple constituents. Also, the time, temperature, weather, season, and distillation process can affect their composition.
What does that mean to you?
It simply means that before you use an essential oil, you will want to make sure that you choose to get your essential oils from a reliable source. One that is aware and cares about every step of the process to bring you the purest, highest quality of essential oils available. Did you know that you can enter the lot number on the bottom of a doTERRA bottle of essential oil into this website, Source to You, and you can see the reports on the purity for that bottle? How AMAZING is that?
